I had another reading buddy with me this morning, and this time it was Thor. He’s not usually big on cuddles, so it was nice to have him join me for a little while. ⠀⠀ I finished In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado! It was an eye-opening read, because domestic abuse in queer relationships isn’t often acknowledged or discussed. It’s very easy to buy into the “lesbian utopia” myth, which I have certainly been guilty of myself. ⠀⠀ I also loved the way Machado wrote this memoir as a series of scenes that correlated to tropes in fairytales and folklore. It was a tough hang, but well worth it. ⠀⠀ This book follows Vanessa Wye in two different timelines- her past in 2000 and her present in 2017. When she was a sophomore in boarding school, she had an affair with a teacher. Years later, other women come out with allegations of sexual harassment against the same teacher, and Vanessa fights the realization that what she experienced was not the loving, consensual relationship she had convinced herself that it was. ⠀⠀ This is a beautifully written novel about the complexities of abuse, consent, and traumatic memories. This is only my second year participating, but it’s becoming a favorite tradition. ⠀⠀ If you are unfamiliar with Jolabokaflod, it is an Icelandic tradition in which friends and loved ones gift each other books on Christmas Eve and spend the night reading. In this case, we have the whole year to read the books before we return them and exchange again. ⠀⠀ Here’s what I received this year: •The Priory of the Orange Tree (not pictured) •Little Weirds •Beastars v.1 •It Chooses You •Call Me By Your Name •Starfish ⠀⠀ Last year I was a terrible procrastinator, so this time I’m planning to jump in pretty quickly. 😊 . . . . . . . #Jolabokaflod #ChristmasBookFlood #bookexchange #tbr #readinglife #bibliophile #booksbooksbooks #bookishlife #bookish #bookcommunity #bookstagramSC #readingtime #readersofinstagram #toread #upstatescbookstagram #currentlyreading #welovebooks Sometimes sequels can be a let down, but #Starsight sure wasn’t! This book really raised the stakes and expanded the universe. I don’t know if this is going to necessarily be a trilogy, but if it is, then Starsight definitely avoided the “middle book syndrome.” ⠀⠀ Not only was the story itself riveting, but the questions and ideas Sanderson explores in this book were more complex than I was expecting.
